Over 29,000 document records provide brief film abstractions, noting credit and plot information while over 3100 lengthier document records contain comprehensive full text descriptions of notable films which correspond to the printed Magill's Survey of Cinema and Magill's Survey of Cinema: Foreign Language Films. Internet Movie Database
http://www.imdb.com
The database aims to capture any and all information associated with movies from across the world, starting with the earliest cinema, going through to the very latest releases and even movies still in production. It covers filmographies for all professions in the industry; plot summaries; character names; movie ratings; year of release; running times; movie trivia; quotes; goofs; soundtracks; personal trivia; alternative names; certificates; color information; country of production; genres; production companies; distributors; special effects companies; sound mix; reference literature; filming locations; sequel/remake information; release dates; advertising tag lines; detailed technical data; alternative versions; laserdisc availability; languages; reviews; links to official studio pages, fan pages, image and multimedia archives; direct purchase links for movies and associated merchandise; box office grosses; movie posters and Academy Award information. Keyword searching is available at the "Word search" or "IMDB features search" "more options" buttons in "Search" mode.

TV Guide's Motion Picture Database
http://www.tvgen.com/movies/database/index.htm
From The Motion Picture Guide, Cinebooks' 23-volume reference landmark, and Ephraim Katz's comprehensive Film Encyclopedia, this search database includes the cast, credits and reviews for more than 30,000 movies released in the U.S., plus filmographies and biographical information on thousands of actors, directors and other filmmakers. The pull-down menu under "Movie Database" allows you to do a "super search". Focus your search of The Motion Picture Guide database with the comprehensive but easy to use Super Search. Using the pull-down windows, mix and match elements from five fields and 18 subfields -- including genre, Academy Award nominations and release year -- or search on keywords and phrases in the text. Use as many or as few of these options as you need. The Super Search does not search biographical entries from Katz's Film Encyclopedia. For biographical information, return to the Simple Search." The reviews provide considerably more description than the IMDB's synopses.

Law-Lib Survey on Law-related Feature Film Collection Policies

Digests of responses to 1994 and 1998 surveys:

The following academic law libraries are known to have feature film collections:
Baylor, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland Marshall, College of William and Mary, Dickinson School of Law, Florida State University, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Indiana University, Loyola Los Angeles, Loyola Chicago, Marquette, Northwestern, Nova Southeastern, Ohio State, Santa Clara, Southern Illinois, Southwestern University, St. Louis, Stetson, Universities of Alabama, California-Los Angeles, Detroit, Idaho, Miami, Richmond, Missouri, Southern California, Texas, Wisconsin, Valparaiso, Washburn

Number of titles: from 25 to over 500, most of them ca. 150

Selection criteria: anything remotely law-related; reflective/supportive of law school classes; historical events that impacted our legal system; entertainment

Who recommends/selects titles: library staff, usually one person in particular; in rare cases recommendations are made mostly by faculty; student suggestions; at Southwestern University, videos are chosen and donated by an alum

Circulation policies: 1 - 3 days; only one library circulates to university at large, all others to law school community only; one does not circulate except for classroom use but is rethinking this policy

Viewing within the library: almost everyone has facilities although most videos are checked out

Security: videos are kept behind the circulation desk or on Reserve, usually in locked cabinets, but there are still minor problems with theft; tattletale tape (some do not desensitize, some do and a few of those reported problems with student workers running the tape through the book desensitizer - N.B. - if you're aware this can happen, you can educate your workers)

Cost of videos: $10 - $20

Vendors: Baker and Taylor Entertainment, Columbia House Video Club, Midwest Tape, Facets, Movies Unlimited

Display and accessibility: So far as I can determine, no one except Tarlton shelves feature films in an open area. Ours are in glass fronted bookshelves (they were originally kept locked as the videos were not stripped). Others keep a binder of the cardboard covers or a printed annotated list at the circulation desk. Recent acquisitions or thematic displays may be periodically mounted. Some list new titles in the library or school newsletter or feature the entire holdings list on the library webpage. In some cases, a subject category such as "feature films" allows online catalog searching.
